Conservatives turned 'DEI' into another dog whistle. Black Twitter isn't having it. | SG53S3W | 2024-04-03 10:08:01

It's arduous being a DEI in a time like this, ain't it?
Within the aftermath of the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland on Tuesday, many on the right have blamed the tragedy on DEI (variety, equity, and inclusion) initiatives.
Thus, "DEI" seems to be turning into a brand new alt-right buzzword in the same vein as "CRT" and "Woke" — canine whistles meant to rally like-minded readers towards efforts at racial equity. See, for example, this X consumer calling Baltimore's elected mayor, Brandon Scott, the "DEI mayor."

This publish particularly kicked off a wave of backlash amongst Black Twitter, who immediately saw the tweet as thinly veiled racism, primarily calling Baltimore's mayor the n-word. In fact, Black Twitter loves a very good joke, and since "DEI" was so oddly used as a not-so-subtle adjective, they ran with it.

This post from user Alecia Renece explains, that calling Mayor Scott the "DEI Mayor" was meant to hurt Black people, who as an alternative turned it right into a joke, thus de-weaponizing one thing that was meant to harm us.
Will it stop alt-right agitators from arising with a brand new canine whistle? No, however at the very least Black Twitter will all the time be ready to push back towards bullshit.
