Save this story Save Story Save this story Last night, a host of marquee celebrities—Charli xcx, Greta Lee, Matthew McConaughey, Serena Williams, and Charlize Theron among them—descended upon Milk Studios in Los Angeles for the inaugural Airbnb.org Gala .
Since the simple existence of an “Airbnb.org Gala” inspires confusion (the gala raised funds for emergency housing initiatives), its red carpet had to set the tone, telegraphing it as a serious event worthy of its impressive guest list. Attendees posed on a sand-colored carpet framed by tall grasses, with an oatmeal step-and-repeat subtly embossed with the organization’s name and insignia behind them. But while the event’s mission was admirable, its sheer randomness, coupled with the caliber of talent that showed out, did make me yearn for the halcyon days of the chaotic step-and-repeat.

It’s a well-worn meme: Chloë Sevigny decked out in Chanel at the 2004 opening of the Atlantic Terminal Target, standing before a shiny white tarp covered in the mass retailer’s telltale logo. But the photo still makes the rounds for a reason; There is something so dementedly delightful about seeing celebrities, glammed up and dressed in their finest fashions, thrust in front of a graphic design monstrosity.
While most step-and-repeats are tactfully understated affairs nowadays, there are still the rare few that throw subtlety to the wind. Recently, Charli xcx, Chappell Roan, Christina Aguilera and Demi Lovato all attended an event for National PrEP Day hosted by Mistr at the Abbey in Los Angeles (PrEP, of course, being an HIV prevention medication, Mistr being a telehealth company specializing in LGBTQ sexual health, and The Abbey being a gay bar). Or take Hunter Schafer, who followed in her forebear Sevigny’s footsteps earlier this month at Comic Con, when she wore a highly coveted, straight-off-the-runway Prada skirt to promote Blade Runner 2099 in front of a Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers backdrop.

Schafer, in her fluorescent Prada skirt and bandeau top, seated in front of a banner advertising chicken fingers, conveys the almost surreal aspect of these silly, starry events. One may not know, just by looking at their restrained, oatmeal-colored backdrop, that the Airbnb.org Gala took place in a photo studio in the doldrums of Hollywood, but Sevigny’s photo did indeed look like it was taken in a Target adjacent to one of MTA’s main arteries. But that’s the best part—that she is committed to looking fabulous no matter the location.
With no intended offense to the Airbnb.org Gala and their clearly well-thought-out minimalist backdrop, a gloriously ugly step-and-repeat would have made the night all the more beautiful.
