The Virginia Mystery That Still Has No Clear Answer

(Beth Copenhaver)

There are many instances of unexplained phenomena happening in Virginia, from UFO sightings to ghost lights, and, of course, unexplained noises. These events can capture our imagination and lead us down a paranormal rabbit hole, but the truth is, many typically have a scientific explanation. But sometimes, pinpointing the right explanation is almost impossible, and this is what leaves us with the case of the strange booms that have been reported over the years. Imagine sitting at home when suddenly you hear an explosive sound that rattles your home only to find no evidence of anything having happened when you step outside. It sounds like the plot of a sci-fi movie, but it’s something that Virginia residents have experienced and still can’t explain.

What Are Virginia’s Mystery Booms, One of the State’s Long-Running Mysteries?

Over the past few decades, residents in different parts of Virginia have reported hard-to-explain instances of dramatic booming sounds without an obvious source. Officials have received reports of this happening in Hampton Roads, Tazewell County, Richmond, and the Eastern Shore-as well as other places throughout the country. The most obvious guess would be a sonic boom, although available evidence shows that in several cases, there wasn’t any reported aircraft that could have caused it. Of course, chasing the source of sound is a difficult task, but it is fascinating that this phenomenon continues to happen, leaving residents and officials quite perplexed.

What People Experience During Virginia’s Mystery Booms

Typically, residents at home have reported either a sudden explosive crack or a deep rumble, followed by doors and windows rattling and the house shaking. In some cases, people across different communities have heard the same thing.

The Eastern Shore Booms of August 2025

A recent report is baffling. In the summer of 2025, residents of Accomack and Northampton Counties reported hearing several booms and rattling vibrations afterward. Some reported that their houses shook as though there was an explosion nearby, while other witnesses saw fog near the roadways. In an article by Shore Daily News, there was speculation of a small earthquake, although there had been no USGS reports of seismic activity. Again, the exact cause of the boom was left undetermined.

The Leading Theories Behind Virginia’s Mystery Booms

There are many things that can cause a loud boom, so part of the problem is identifying which could be attributed to each of the events. One theory is that it is a sonic boom from aircraft, particularly military aircraft. This kind of sound could certainly cause a delayed “explosion” to be felt on the ground, but this would only account for the more coastal booms. Another theory points to small, shallow earthquakes. If the earthquake is happening close to the surface, it could cause vibrations that sound like a boom. And theoretically, these would be too small to even be picked up by a monitor.

Why Virginia’s Mystery Booms Still Can’t Be Fully Explained

It’s not so much that there’s no logical explanation for the booms heard throughout Virginia, but rather pinpointing one specific reason for each is almost impossible. And because there’s no confirmed cause, these events take on an almost supernatural element. There’s no way to know when the mystery booms will happen, and even harder to know why.
