Oarfish sometimes reside at depths of up to 3,300 ft, but Japanese legend says they seem in shallow waters when a seismic occasion is imminent.
Now it has emerged that the fish was caught within the Philippines shortly before neighbouring Taiwan confronted its largest quake in 25 years.
It was found near Kalanggaman Island, roughly 900 miles south of the epicentre, some 30 hours earlier than the earthquake occurred.
Brenjeng Caayon, whose fishing boat MB Starlight made the catch at 2am on Tuesday, believes it's no coincidence.
Speaking yesterday, he stated: 'This can be a dangerous omen, based on superstition.
'And it may be an omen, as a result of just this morning an earthquake rocked Taiwan.
'I didn't consider it before, but now I've began to. I own the fishing boat, and I had three fishermen onboard. The crew didn't know the sort of fish – it was their first time to see it.
'They have been imagined to throw it back in, but I ended them; I advised them to convey it ashore.
'Once I saw it, I recognised it immediately; I've already seen an oarfish earlier than, but not this big.'
Mr Caayon, 53, stated the fish was almost 5 ft lengthy and weighed 15kg.
But he was fatalistic concerning the animal's sinister fame, which has earned it the nickname 'doomsday fish'.
He stated: 'The whole lot that occurs is a healing of our mom earth.
'The pure catastrophe is all the time there.
'I consider in God and that's the rationale why I'm not afraid.'
The 7.4 magnitude earthquake in Taiwan has thus far killed 9 individuals and injured at the very least 963, based on the island's hearth division.
Its epicentre was 11 miles south of Hualien Metropolis, a coastal settlement on the east of the island.
Perception within the ominous nature of the oarfish gained new prominence after the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami devastated Japan.
In 2010, ecological seismologist Kiyoshi Wadatsumi, speculated that the creature's legend could also be grounded in science.
He advised the Japan Occasions: 'Deep-sea fish dwelling near the ocean bottom are extra delicate to the actions of lively faults than those close to the surface of the ocean.'
Nevertheless a 2019 report from the Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America failed to determine a connection.
The authors wrote: 'From this investigation, the spatiotemporal relationship between deep‐sea fish appearances and earthquakes was hardly discovered.
'Hence, this Japanese folklore is deemed to be a superstition attributed to the illusory correlation between the 2 events.'
