Everton are through to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup after seeing off Newcastle 3-1.

James Garner, Hayden Hackney and Thierno Barry were all on the scoresheet at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Thursday night. Dan Burn netted a late consolation for Newcastle.

The Toffees will head to Fleetwood Town in the last eight in December, after the League Two side's epic win over Arsenal earlier in the week.

It provides Everton with a real opportunity of reaching a first cup semi-final since 2016.

Everton announced before the game that Jack Grealish had been dropped due to a disciplinary breach. It was reporter that the Man City loanee had missed a training session earlier in the week.

The hosts found the lead from nothing on 34 minutes. Tyrique George's pressure saw Amar Dedic lose the ball on the sidelines. Hackney then flicked the ball into Garner, who finessed a shot into the bottom corner.

On the stroke of half-time it was 2-0. Hackney turned scorer this time as he guided home from Barry's cross, to claim his first goal for the club.

And then it was Barry's time on 69 minutes, finishing up a clinical counter-attack with some fine movement and a cool finish after picking up Kieran Dewsbury-Hall's pass.

Burn headed in late on for Newcastle, but it was too little, too late.

12: CHANCE! Gonzalez picks out the smart run of Barnes down the left. The winger ghosts in behind Rohl to head towards goal but he draws a save from Pickford instead.

34: GOAL! Garner applies some finesse on his finish to put Everton ahead. It comes from nothing. Dedic loses it near the corner flag, under pressure from George. Hackney finds Garner with a neat pass and the Everton midfielder curls home.

45: GOAL! HACKNEY GUIDES HOME HIS FIRST EVERTON GOAL! It all starts from a Newcastle opportunity. Barnes' effort takes a nick, and Pickford gathers before starting an Everton counter. Dewsbury-Hall leads the charge forward before being taken out. Advantage is played and Barry keeps going, taking the ball wide before digging out a cross for Hackney to see home.

69: GOAL! NEWCASTLE ARE SLICED OPEN BY EVERTON. Garner carries the ball up the field and feeds Dewsbury-Hall. He continues the charge down the left, pulling back a cross into the area. Barry has all the time in the world in the Newcastle box to compose himself and fire into the top corner.

89: GOAL! Burn heads in to give his side a consolation. Willock swings a ball into the area and Burn, high up the field, beats O'Brien to the ball. Burn is then booked, along with Joelinton and Tarkowski for some pushing and shoving after the goal.

Newcastle head coach Matthias Jaissle called on his side to show greater maturity after their defeat to Everton, describing the result as a reflection of the "story of the season so far".

"We lack in the clinical approach to solve the situations; just think about the first one," Jaissle said.

"This is again a no-risk zone where we clear the ball and nothing happens, and a couple of seconds later you can see the goal out of nothing.

"These are the things we need to learn quickly. We had many occasions, many opportunities to score, big chances as well, but in their box we need to be more clinical to get a different result."

Jaissle insisted Newcastle's overall performance was not as poor as the scoreline suggested, but acknowledged their individual mistakes had proved costly.

"We need to avoid these mistakes, be more mature, be more clinical in these situations," he added.

"This is a learning process, but you don't get the time. We need to learn fast, especially with these young lads. Being a young team is not an excuse any more."

David Moyes praised Everton's squad values and professionalism after they put the Jack Grealish situation to one side to reach the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

Grealish was left out after reportedly missing a training session, with Moyes describing his absence as a club decision.

Asked whether he was pleased with his players' professionalism, Moyes said: "The one thing about Everton and what they've got is they've got really good values behind it.

"All the players stand up to the values, accept the values Everton put out there, what we want from them on the pitch and off the pitch, and from that point of view, the players done a brilliant job tonight.

"It's a smallish squad we've got, and we're limited in some areas. But we're doing our best to try and keep challenging."
