Status meant everything to the former Duke of York, and he reinforced its importance as a father, pushing for his daughters,Princess Beatriceand Princess Eugenie, to be styled as "Her Royal Highness" and receive princess titles at birth.

Ahead of Eugenie's marriage toJack Brooksbankin October 2018, Andrew insisted ona full-scale royal wedding at Windsor Castle's St. George's Chapel, complete with security and public spectacle, despite mounting questions about his own standing inside the family.

"There'll be a few more people than most people have. There are a few more than Harry had, but that's just the nature of Eugenie and Jack — they've got so many friends that they need a church of that size to fit them all in," he explained.

When Andrew was arrested at home in Sandringham on his 66th birthday in February, shock spread quickly through a family long insulated from consequence, an institution conditioned to contain damage and a public no longer willing to accept royal privilege as a shield.

What began as a legal crisis forQueen Elizabeth's son —detained for 11 hours on suspicion of misconduct in public office, linked to allegations that he improperly shared information as a trade envoy with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein — became something broader: a harsh moment of exposure for the palace culture that protected him, and his family, for decades.

"What's changed now is that the public tolerance for indulgence without accountability has collapsed," says Catherine Mayer, author ofDivide & Rule.

Gosling first asked the audience if they would sing to Mendes, who was backstage. A staff member went to get an unassuming Mendes, and as she made her way to the stage, he joked, "Here's the thing, you might find me in the Hudson River tomorrow."

Mendes joined the festivities, notably wearing Gosling's blue and white striped Louis Vuitton cardigan, whichhe recently wore during an appearance onJeopardy! She paired the piece with retro-inspired wide-leg jeans and a black and white T-shirt featuring the cover of John Lennon and Yoko Ono's 1980 albumDouble Fantasy.

The Golden Globe-winning actor wore a black collared shirt with black trousers and a double-breasted gray blazer with gold buttons.

When Mendes walked out to a cheering audience, Gosling went to grab her hand, and they went on the stage together. She then acknowledged the teachers and students who were in the audience, thanking them for their impact as she asked Fallon, "You'll cut all this, right?" He grinned, replying, "No!"

Gosling clapped and sang along, and Mendes thanked him with a kiss on the cheek as confetti rained down.

The moment comes over 10 years after the couple walked a red carpet together in 2013 for the New York City premiere ofThe Place Beyond The Pines. They first met during filming in 2011. In 2022, Mendes began publicly referring to Gosling as her husband, seemingly confirming they had tied the knot in private at an unknown time. In November of that year, she shared a photo of a "de Gosling" tattoo. In Latino culture, the use of "de" or "of" unifies the woman's last name with her husband's after marriage, meaning the tattoo was indicative of her marriage to Gosling.

In a subsequent interview with theKyle and Jackie O Show,Mendes claimed she had gotten the tattoo "years ago", adding that she likes to keep her personal life "mysterious."

"We don't do those things together," Mendes wrote in response to a follower on Instagram at the time, adding that she's "only comfortable" reposting photos that are already circulating on the internet.
