Spare keys are great because they can come in handy in an emergency. Preparation is key, so don't wait until you need a spare. Make copies before it's too late and you're locked out or stuck in a jam. You can make as many copies of your physical keys as you need.
Or you could ditch the key entirely and opt for a digital deadbolt. These work with a key but can also unlock with a PIN code, an app or a fingerprint. That way, you can still get in without a physical key or let someone else in whether you're there or not.

How to get a spare key made
Always use the original key when making duplicates, since copies of copies may not work as well.
Visit your local home improvement store and look for the DIY key kiosk. These machines can duplicate most keys in just minutes. However, some keys may require assistance from an employee and a different machine to make copies.
Consider having a copy key to:
Hide outside your home.
Keep at your office or in your car.
Share with family or houseguests.
Leave with a trusted neighbor.
Keep track of your keys
A lot of keys look the same, so label them to make it easier to keep track of which one goes where.
