Harper's Bazaar 2026 Coachella Valley Music And Arts Festival - Weekend 2 - Day 2

Sometimes childhood dreams really do come true. Just askBillie Eilishafter last night. An OG Justin Bieber fan, the artist lived out all of our fanfic fantasies at Coachella Music Festival when her longtime idol brought her on stage with him to revive an old tradition: the “One Less Lonely Girl” serenade.

If you were a fangirl in the early 2010s, a ticket to Justin Bieber’s debut tour,My World, was a prized possession—an all-access pass to the heart of tween giddiness, purple temporary tattoos, and likeminded girls dragging their parents around the arena. It also granted you the possibility of being chosen as that night’s “One Less Lonely Girl,” an extra-special golden ticket straight up to the stage where you’d be serenaded by Bieber (and his floppy hair) himself. It didn’t matter how slight those odds were—you put on your best fit and hoped for the best.

Among the rest of us was Billie Eilish. A longtime Belieber, the artist has been vocal since the start of her career about how much theSWAG IIsinger’s music has meant to her. In a clip from a2019 interviewon the Netherlands’s talk showDe Wereld Draait Door, a then 17-year-old Eilish even shared that the only time she ever said to herself, “I want to be famous,” was so she “could be closer to Justin Bieber.”

Justin Bieber and Billie Eilish

“I was planning on it,” she said. “I was like, ‘if I got famous, then I would be closer to meeting him.’” When they did ultimately meet that same year, it was at Coachella.

Now, seven years later, she was released from the crowd and ushered to the stage by Hailey Bieber, collapsing to the ground before even reaching the seat set up for her. Overcome by emotion, she stayed there until the headliner helped her up, hugging her as he sang. We’re in tears.

What does 420 mean?

420 refers to the date April 20, which has come to be known as theunofficial stoner holiday, when marijuana smokers celebrate their love of bud.

The number 420 itself has also become shorthand for marijuana culture, often used as a colloquial reference to the plant and the act of consuming it. The day is also used by activists and supporters to call for broader legalization andfederal decriminalization of weedin the U.S. and beyond.

4/20 falls on a Monday this year; but that won't stop the celebration.

Why is 420 associated with weed?

You may have heard some of the most popular rumors that have swirled through the culture zeitgeist over the years: that 420 is the police code for marijuana use; that it refers to the number of active chemicals in weed; that April 20 was Bob Marley's birthday (it wasn't); or that it's a nod to Bob Dylan’s song “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35” (12 times 35 equals 420).

In reality, the origin is much simpler and perhaps less exciting than those theories.

While no one can say for absolute certain, one widely accepted origin traces back to a group of teenagers hanging out after school.

In the early 1970s,five students at San Rafael High Schoolin Marin County, California, would meet after extracurricular activities near a wall at school. The group, eventually called the "Waldos," simply for the fact that they met by a wall to do their thing, made their official meeting time for 4:20 p.m. and eventually started using "420" as code for smoking.

One of the Waldo members, Dave Reddix, later got work as a roadie for the Grateful Dead, and the band helped to popularize the term,he told Time Magazine. A key moment came in December 1990, when some Oakland Deadheads distributed a flyer inviting people to smoke on April 20 at 4:20 p.m.

A reporter atHigh Timesmagazinegot hold of the flyerand printed it in 1991, bringing it to the attention of cannabis fans across state lines. The magazine continued using "420" in later publications, solidifying its place in pop culture.

Steve Bloom, the "High Times" reporter who originally received the flyer, later credited the Waldos for originating the term. Ina 2013 blog, he wrote that "they wanted people all over the world to get together on one day each year and collectively smoke pot at the same time. They birthed the idea of a stoner holiday, which April 20 has become."

Where is weed legal?

Looking forward to partaking this 4/20? Make sure you understand the marijuana laws where you live

The legalization of marijuana varies by state, with rules ranging from medical-only use to fully recreational. Currently, at least24 states and D.C. have legalized recreational use, and several others are weighing changes through legislation or upcoming ballot measures.

Oil tanker captain braves volatile Middle East waters as US-Iran tensions rise

This critical maritime corridor has become aflashpoint in the US-Israel conflict with Iran, disrupting global tradeand leaving crews vulnerable to attack.

For Al-Jubouri, a veteran mariner since 1984, these hostilities are not new; he has endured decades of regional upheaval, including theIran-Iraq War and the 1991 Gulf War.

Once again, he operates in high-risk zones, where sporadic military strikes threaten vessels in vital chokepoints like Bab el-Mandeb and thePersian Gulf.

He stated: "Workhas become a real risk; we don’t know when we might be bombed. We’re sailing over a ball of fire."

Captain Al-Jubouri, aboard thePalau-flagged Sea Moon for four months, is currently sailing from the Gulf of Aden towards theGulf of Omanto unload oil atYemen's Ras Isa port, he told The Associated Press by phone.

Commercial vessels are increasingly caught in the crossfire of this regional conflict, intensified by theWashington-Tehranstandoff over theStrait of Hormuz.

Several tankers have been targeted in attacks by Iranian forces and their allied groups. Intermittent disruptions and threats to close this critical global oil chokepoint have resulted in vessels being delayed, rerouted, or stranded across the Gulf.

On Sunday, American military forces forcibly seized an Iranian-flagged cargo ship that tried to get around a naval blockade near the strait, the first such interception since the blockade of Iranian ports began last week.

The dangers of his work mean his crew undergoes regular safety drills to prepare for potential attacks. “We’ve trained them on how to respond if the ship comes under fire,Godforbid,” he said.

Last year, while docked at a Yemeni port, his vessel came under bombardment. “I immediately cut the ropes, prepared the engines, and left the port at my own risk to protect the crew and the ship,” he said.

Shrapnel struck the tanker as it pulled away, causing minor damage, but the crew escaped unharmed. Despite the ongoing threat, the vessel later returned to port operations and resumed its planned route.

Not all of al-Jubouri’s crew can bear the dangers of the job, however. His team has thinned from 27 sailors to 17, he said.Feardrove them away.

The psychological toll is compounded by long stretches at sea. For four months, al-Jubouri has not seen his family. Like many sailors, he struggles with homesickness.

“We suffer from being away from our families and our homelands,” he said. While internet access on board allows crew members to stay in touch, the distance feels especially stark amid the strain of an ongoing war.

Basic supplies, at least, remain steady.Foodand bottled water are regularly replenished at port, with no major shortages reported.

Al-Jubouri’s four decades at sea allow him to adapt under pressure, he said.

Cher Files for Conservatorship of 'Gravely Disabled' Son Elijah Blue Allman Again amid Hospitalization Following Arrests

Cher has filed for conservatorship of her son Elijah Blue Allman again, citing severe mental health and addiction issues

  • Court documents obtained by PEOPLE allege Allman is "gravely disabled" and unable to manage his finances or avoid dangerous situations

  • Allman is in a psychiatric hospital after his recent arrests and faces criminal charges in New Hampshire

Cherhas filed for conservatorship of her sonElijah Blue Allmanagain following his arrests earlier this year.

The 79-year-old "Believe" icon filed a petition earlier this week in Los Angeles Superior Court, according to documents obtained by PEOPLE, to appoint a temporary conservator of the 49-year-old "gravely disabled" and allegedly drug-dependent Allman's estate.

Cher previouslyfiled for a temporary conservatorshipover her son's estate in December 2023 and requested herself as the sole conservator. This time, she requested fiduciary Jason Rubin fill the position.

The new filing claims Allman's life "has significantly deteriorated" since the last conservatorship petition was filed.

The documents claim Allman is "currently in custody in the State of New Hampshire in a locked psychiatric hospital in an attempt to restore him to competency to face criminal charges in two cases across two New Hampshire counties for: felony burglary criminal mischief, simple assault, criminal trespass and breach of bail, but that is just the current set of problems."

Cher alleges Allman "has no concept of money" and "is unable to manage his financial resources and is unable to withstand fraud or undue influence" due to his "severe mental health and addiction issues."

The documents find Cher claiming Allman "spends any money he gets immediately," nearly always on "drugs, expensive hotels and limousine transportation."

The Grammy winner alleges in the documents that Allman hasn't paid "any income taxes," owing $200,000, and did not appear in court after his estranged wife Marieangela Kingordered him to pay spousal support. Cher also claims Allman owed $18,000 to "a drug dealer who tracked him down," leading him to borrow money from a friend "to avoid being harmed."

The documents allege Allman doesn't have an "awareness of consequences for the damage he caused at various Airbnbs where he had been staying; were it not for his friends and family cleaning up the financial and physical messes he made at those residences, he would have even more judgments against him." A recent Airbnb stay allegedly led to Allman owing $50,000.

"Elijah has no ability to manage money, and any dollar he receives from his father’s trust (his only source of income) is immediately squandered without regard for his liabilities or well-being," reads the documents, referencing an alleged annual $120,000 payment Allman receives via Cher's ex-husband Gregg Allman's trust.

Cher claims there's "a clear pattern in Elijah’s behavior," as he "receives his trust distribution" and subsequently "checks into a hotel, usually the Chateau Marmont, buys and does drugs until he runs out of money, ends up in the hospital or overdoses."

"Based on this pattern, if Elijah were to receive his trust distribution, he will use it buy drugs," Cher claims, noting that Allman's actions have led to "thousands of dollars in damages from cigarette burns in the rugs, beds, dressers, broken windows [and] walls." She alleges he's "been thrown out of a total of 18 hotels because he has made guests feel uncomfortable [by] screaming obscenities and acting erratically."

Furthermore, Cher alleges Allman's been "exhibiting hyper-sexual behavior" and once "aggressively" pushed sexual relations onto a young maid at a hotel.

Allman also once allegedly "was found in the middle of traffic passed out in his car. Emergency services responded and transported him to the hospital, where he was administered Narcan," claims his mom in the documents.

Additionally, Cher claims Allman has "caused grease fires while cooking after zoning out and forgetting that food was on the stove" multiple times. She alleges his "situation has become dire on multiple fronts" due to his "severely deteriorated" mental health and "terrible" financial situation, while his "drug dependency is at its worst."

The "If I Could Turn Back Time" musician says Allman is "gravely disabled" and argues a conservatorship over his person is "appropriate" when he returns to California. [Hislatest arrest in Marchoccurred in Windham, N.H.]

Devon Allman, half-brother of Elijah, wrote to the court as well with his own "opinion" about his condition, alleging Elijah "is currently a danger to himself and unable to manage his life and any funds that would become available to him."

"My recent visit to check in on him brought me unfortunate and profound sadness that took weeks of my life to process. His condition, both physical and mental, was appalling and delusional, respectively," continued Devon, 53. He also recalls having "to negotiate with a heroin dealer for a five-figure sum of drug debts" in a "very difficult" situation.

A rep for Cher did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

Cher previouslydismissed her petition for conservatorshipin September 2024 after reaching a private agreement.

Last month, Elijah was arrested after police responded to a report of a residential break-in involving forced entry, according to a press release obtained by PEOPLE. The arrest came days after hewas arrested in the nearby city of Concord and taken into custodyafter he allegedly caused a disturbance at an elite prep school, the Concord Police Department (CPD) confirmed to PEOPLE at the time.

Elijah is due in court for the Concord case on Monday, April 20, and again for the Windham case on Wednesday, April 22. A hearing about the new conservatorship filing is set for Friday, April 24.
