'Barbie' fans are shocked Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie were shut out of Oscar noms | 24TAA9U | 2024-01-30 10:08:01
It's decidedly not a Barbie world on the 96th Academy Awards.
This morning (Jan. 23) the Academy announced its 2024 Oscar nominations, and two Barbie favorites have been snubbed: Greta Gerwig for Greatest Director and Margot Robbie for Greatest Actress. But the movie did walk away with eight nominations, together with Greatest Picture, Gerwig and Noah Baumbach for Greatest Adapted Screenplay, Ryan Gosling for Greatest Supporting Actor, and America Ferrera for Greatest Supporting Actress.
For Barbie fans, Gerwig and Robbie's snubs felt a bit of too close to the themes of the movie. Followers pointed to Gosling's Ken getting nominated as an alternative of Robbie's Barbie as proof of patriarchy in the Real World, despite the actors competing in several classes — and Ferrera scoring a shock nomination.
To some, this second is the right encapsulation of Ferrera's now Oscar-nominated monologue: "[Women] need to all the time be extraordinary, but someway we're all the time doing it incorrect."
As all the time, fans took to Twitter / X to air their grievances. One fan posted, "Ken getting nominated and never Barbie is truthfully so fitting for a movie a few man discovering the facility of patriarchy within the Real World." Another wrote, "Ryan Gosling, while deserving, obtained an Oscar nomination for Barbie while Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie didn't? Utterly proving the point of the movie in 20 fucking 24 you can't make this up." Dozens of posts echo this sentiment.

As Billie Eilish's Oscar-nominated track goes, "When did it finish? All of the enjoyment."
